Lighting is One of the most important consideration in the Marine Reef Tank.
At this time we are Blessed with a wide selections of Light set , however proper selection is essential for Health and Good Color Viewing of Marine tank.
There are 3 Types of Light that are of particular benefit to the Marine Tank as follows :

1) Metal Hilight is the strongest Light output for Tank Depth Upto 36 inches
Suited for keeping SPS , LPS, & Clams. On the down Side - it is hot and consume more electricity ,remote electronic ballast is available now for MH to saves electricity and lower heat output , also necesary to use cooling Fan to expel heat away from tank inorder to reduce chiller Run time and lower electrical cost.
Available in 6500 K , 10,000K , 14,000K & Blue/Violet Spectrum

2) T5 light is the popular option for many Reefers , It has a strong light Spectrum
to penetrate Tank depth upto 24 inches , is cool and saves electricity.
Suited for General Reefing of LPS and Soft corals
Available in 10,000K , 20,000k & Blue Spectrum

3) PL light is the 3rd most Popular - utilising U- Tube, can penetrate Upto 18 inches of water depth .
Suited for General Reefing of LPS and Soft corals

Guildlines for Choosing MH light Set
150 watts is the Best choice for Marine Tank considering the Balance of Heat ,
light Intensity and also Cost of electricty.
70 watts has insufficient light Intensty , while 250 watts is too hot and too intense for most corals except SPS . Over Exposure Intense Light will cause Photo saturation and Shrinkage for many corals, 250 watts also very costly , Heat up the
environment and makes the Chiller Runs all the time.
It is a better choice to use 2 * 150 watts spaced suitably apart for even distribution over the Reef tank than Spot illumination by one 250 watts MH light.
